Use of face coverings to be maintained in secondary schools

The Cwm Taf University Health Board has announced that the use of face coverings should be maintained in all high schools in the area.

The temporary measure was initially implemented at the beginning of October as cases of coronavirus rose among young people.

After a review conducted on October 20, 2021, it was concluded that the use of face coverings should continue as Covid-19 transmission rates remain higher in the 10-19 age group. This will be reviewed on an ongoing basis.

In Bridgend County, high schools are maintaining the use of face coverings as part of Covid-19 control measures. This means that face coverings are already in use not only in public areas such as hallways and halls, but also in classrooms.

Face coverings provide additional protection from infection for pupils and staff, and are already used in conjunction with existing control measures such as regular lateral flow testing every two weeks.

Cllr Charles Smith, Cabinet Member for Education and Renewal, said: “We welcome and support the extension of this measure and encourage all students to ensure they wear their own face masks at school.

“The use of face coverings is already in place in our schools as part of local control measures, and with cases still rising among young people, wearing a face covering is an effective way to mitigate the risks of spreading Covid-19.

“We continue to encourage anyone over 16 who has not yet received their first dose of the vaccine to go to the Community Vaccination Center. You can go to any center without an appointment between 11 am and 4:30 pm.”

Meanwhile, vaccinations are still offered to all 12-15-year-olds, with the intention of all appointments being offered by the end of the half-term.

A vaccination center is available at Ravens Court in downtown Bridgend (CF31 4AP). You will need to bring a form of identification such as a passport, driver’s license or utility bill to prove the address.

Details of other vaccination centers in the area are available on the Health Board’s website.
