Local middle schools have been contacted about the project with principals excited about the shoe collection scheme and ready to put collection boxes in their schools.

“The original idea was to join Shoe Aid International to get children’s shoes to African countries, but the logistics and costs of setting this up were not only very difficult, but also very expensive,” explained Brian Waters, Secretary of Rotary Saundersfoot.

“Most children tend to put their shoes on rather than put them on, and while there are other collection points in our area, we don’t know if the result is landfill, something we’d like to avoid.

“The result was exceptional as more than 100 pairs of children’s shoes were donated, as well as men’s and women’s shoes.

“Some of the shoes have already been sent to recognized charitable organizations in Eastern Europe for distribution to the real needy.

This was achieved through the generosity of local individuals who kindly transported the shoes at their own expense.

He continued: “The majority of the remaining shoes will be delivered to the Wellingborough warehouse where they will be selected, sorted and sterilized before being made available to charities within the UK.”

“Captain Linda Reed of the Tenby Salvation Army and Brian Jenkins of the Saundersfoot Rotary Club joined forces to start this project, while the principals, staff, children and parents of Sageston and St Oswalds Schools were instrumental in making this project a success. This would not have been possible without their invaluable help and cooperation. .

“On behalf of the people who got the shoes, we sincerely thank everyone involved, and hope to repeat the project in the future,” added Brian.
