If you’re looking for a warm-weather destination this winter, you might just look in your own backyard.

Houston ranks fifth on WalletHub’s new list of the best winter destinations for warm-weather enthusiasts.

The ranking clearly excludes any mention of last winter’s devastating ice storm that engulfed all of Texas.

To determine the best winter destinations, WalletHub compare 69 of the most populous metro areas in the United States across six categories: travel and hassle costs, local costs, attractions, weather, activities, and safety.

Houston does particularly well in the Travel & Hassle (#2), Domestic (#4), and Attractions (#9) category. It lands at #10 for hot weather activities and #23 for weather, and drops significantly for safety (#30).

Among the other major metro stations in Texas, Austin, Dallas-Fort Worth, and San Antonio are ranked first, fourth, and sixth, respectively.

Behind Austin in the winter weather rankings are Las Vegas No. 2 and No. 3 San Diego.

“The outlook for the winter travel season is looking good. “Traveling within your area is a great way to have a fun and relaxing trip while also saving time and money,” she adds. “It’s also a great way to spend money locally, with small businesses, which are the backbone of the travel industry.”
