Double Scholarship Recipient Chasing Artistic Dreams

For Faith Henare-Stewart, receiving two UCOL scholarships will help her realize her dream of working as a multi-talented artist and impart her creative skills.

Henare-Stewart was one of 38 UCOL students to receive scholarships at ceremonies held at the Manawatū campus recently.

Henare-Stewart, who is studying for a New Zealand degree in music, has been awarded the International Soroptimist Scholarship and the Fenton Te Rauparaha (Ralph) Flavell Memorial Scholarship – which are awarded to Maori students in their pursuit of an education related to survival and revitalization of Maori language and culture.

“I feel relieved to receive these scholarships and feel like I have accomplished something great. These scholarships will help with my tuition fees and help me pursue my career and my passion,” says Henare-Stewart.

Henare-Stewart came to UCOL this year after completing Poutuarongo Toi Whakarākai (Textile) – Bachelor of Design and Art (Textile) at Te Wānanga o Raukawa. She has also taught Maori performing arts in schools and for a dance company.

Henare-Stewart wants to continue to expand her creative talents, using it to showcase Māori performing arts to her community and to express “true Māoridom in action” to young people. She also plans to study to become a teacher.

“My main goal, every day of my life, is to make myself a bigger basket of knowledge and never shorten myself,” says Henare-Stewart.

The scholarship ceremonies also saw twenty-seven students receive the Women in Commerce Scholarships, a new $25,000 scholarship initiative launched this year thanks to external donors. The scholarship aims to make careers accessible to more women, with the goal of increasing the number and retention of women in the professions. Miter 10 Mega and Bunnings Warehouse has also supported this initiative by ensuring that the funding helps more students.

Overall, scholarship applications have been particularly strong this year. There have been so many high-quality applications for the UCOL Effort and Achievement Scholarship that three scholarships have been awarded for the full $1000.
