CAJ-Investintech launch third annual Canadian data journalism scholarship


TorontoAnd November 1, 2021 / CNW / – The Canadian Association of Journalists is pleased to announce that nominations are now open for the third year. Investintech-CAJ Data Journalism Scholarship.

The scholarship aims to support and recognize post-secondary students interested in journalism. The scholarship winner will be a Canadian student whose submission demonstrates an interest in and understanding of data journalism tools and techniques.


The winner will receive a one-time cash prize of 1000 dollars CAD, free one-year membership to CAJ, and free pass to CAJ’s annual national conference Montreal in a May 2022.

A jury of trusted data journalists will review all submissions in accordance with the press guidelines and standards.


The application deadline is April 29, 2022 in a 11:59pm EST.

Eligibility – Eligibility:

Students who are:

  • Major in a journalism program, working toward a bachelor’s or master’s degree.
  • You have been accepted or enrolled in a Canadian college or university.
  • Pursuing a course of study leading to an undergraduate or postgraduate degree.
  • Non-journalist students who apply must demonstrate and demonstrate an interest in journalistic work.

Application details:

Submissions must include the following:

  • An example of journalistic work demonstrating the application of data skills and tools.
  • An explanation of what you did, how you did it and the resources used. If the item submitted was produced as part of a team of two or more people, you must show proof of work.
  • An idea for a project that you would like to work on if you have more data journalism skills.
  • A letter of support from a teacher or editor.

Selection process and review guidelines:

  • follow all requirements; Complete all details
  • Entries must be in English or French
  • Minimum word count for written parts: 500
  • Creativity, style, coherence, readability
  • Effective use of data, visualizations, and media used
  • Key sources associated with back claims; The power of the subject and work

Selection Committee: Investintech will collaborate with CAJ to create a jury of judges with experience and credentials from official publications. It will include one Investintech representative and one CAJ member.
