Apple debuts first standalone original podcast, the true crime series ‘Hooked’

Apple today launched its first independent original podcast series, Hooked. All previous Apple podcasts have been linked to Apple TV+ features (such as The Line). Unless Apple announces TV+ connectivity in the future, Hooked is a standalone audio series.

Hooked is a true crime podcast about the true story of Tony Hathaway, whose opiate addition led him to undo a career in bank robbery. The show is available for free within the Apple Podcasts app.

Hooked is hosted by journalist Josh Dean, showing clips from years of interviews with the Hathaway family and law enforcement.

Apple launched the show three episodes in advance and new episodes will start on Wednesday.

The company’s plans for the original podcast are still somewhat unclear. For example, it is unknown how many original podcast productions Apple is developing. Only one show was previously reported as a serial, an as-yet-unreleased documentary podcast about Siegfried & Roy.

All previous Apple podcasts have been labeled “Apple TV + podcasts,” as they were siblings to an original television project, such as the Foundation or For All Mankind accompanying podcasts. In a similar vein, “The Line” has been launched as a six-part podcast series to accompany the four-part TV + series that premieres later this month.

Hooked is simply referred to as the “original Apple podcast,” as there is no obvious link to Apple’s TV section. In a sign of how recent this is with Apple, the show was published by Apple TV+ in Apple Podcasts, where there isn’t a separate section yet for Apple’s original podcast.
